Bhuang Suang Phaya Nak Bueng Khong Long: Ancient Belief of the Mekong River Basin That Thai People Have Long Revered

A female artist traveled to Bueng Khong Long in Nong Khai Province to perform a ritual of reverence and seek blessings from the Naga King according to local beliefs, with the lighting of incense and candles for worship and the recitation of prayers following transmitted traditions.

Beliefs about the Naga in the Mekong Basin

The Naga or Naga King is considered an important sacred symbol in the beliefs of Buddhists in both Thailand and Laos, particularly in the Mekong River basin region where ancient legends tell that the Naga is the lord of rivers and streams, with power over rainfall and the protection of people living along the riverbanks.

In Buddhism, the Naga has held an important role since the time of the Buddha, with a story telling how Mucalinda, the Naga King, spread his hood to protect the Buddha during his meditation in the rainy season. This is the origin of the image of the Buddha in the Naga Protected posture, which is revered by Buddhists everywhere.

Bueng Khong Long and Inherited Sacredness

Bueng Khong Long is a large natural body of water in Nong Khai Province. The local people have long believed it to be the abode of the sacred Naga King, and thus perform rituals of reverence and seek blessings regularly every year, especially during important Buddhist festival seasons.

According to traditional belief, those who worship the Naga King with sincere faith will receive blessings in matters of prosperity, safety, and smooth commerce. Local people typically bring flowers, incense, candles, and offerings to present according to tradition, while reciting prayers to seek blessings with respect.

Ritual Ceremonies According to Belief Principles

The ritual of reverence to the Naga King according to traditional practice typically has clear steps, beginning with the preparation of offerings that consist of betel, flowers, incense, candles, and seasonal fruits. Then incense and candles are lit for worship along with the recitation of prayers with respect and faith.

Those who perform the ritual often observe the characteristics of the incense smoke and ash after worship. According to local belief, the appearance of incense ash may indicate good fortune or a response from the sacred being, but the most important thing is to have a pure mind and sincere intention to do good.

The belief concerning the Naga King reflects respect for nature and the waters that have nurtured people's lives for a long time. It is a cultural heritage that should be preserved in an appropriate manner, without excessive delusion, while still maintaining the value of local beliefs and traditions for future generations to study and pass down.
