What Are Sacred Charms?

Sacred charms (เครื่องรางของขลัง) are consecrated objects that have been ritually empowered through incantations by masters well-versed in esoteric arts. They are believed to channel protective energy, attract good fortune, inspire affection and goodwill (Metta Mahaniyom), or grant invulnerability to their owners.

Types of Thai Sacred Charms

Takrut

A Takrut (ตะกรุด) is a thin metal sheet inscribed with sacred Yant characters, then rolled into a cylinder and strung on a braided cord to be worn as an armband or necklace. Its spiritual properties vary according to the inscribed characters — for example, Takrut Maha Ut confers invulnerability, while Takrut Thon promotes loving-kindness and personal magnetism.

Pha Yant

A Pha Yant (ผ้ายันต์) is a cloth inscribed with sacred Yant characters using consecrated ink. It is commonly hung in homes or shops for protection and blessings. Popular examples include Pha Yant Jatupithoponchai and Pha Yant Thongchai Chaloemphon.

Luk Om

A Luk Om (ลูกอม) is a small sacred object typically made from a blend of sacred powders. It is held in the mouth to enhance personal charm, inspire goodwill, and lend persuasiveness to one's speech — making it especially suitable for those engaged in negotiation or trade.

The Proper Way to Venerate Sacred Charms

Light one or three incense sticks, address the charm with reverence, and make a sincere vow to conduct yourself virtuously and uphold the Five Precepts. Recite the incantation given by your master, and never use the charm for any purpose that violates moral principles.

Important Cautions

Sacred charms are not magical shortcuts that bring success without any effort on your part. Faith and righteous conduct are the essential foundations. Always obtain charms from trustworthy sources, do not be taken in by exaggerated claims of supernatural power, and above all, keep your mind pure and your conduct in accordance with moral and ethical principles.
