What Is Feng Shui?
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice concerned with the placement and orientation of objects and spaces to allow "chi" energy to flow in a balanced way, promoting good fortune, health, and happiness for those who dwell within.
The Five Fundamental Elements
Wood: Growth, health, the color green, the East
Fire: Reputation, energy, the color red, the South
Earth: Stability, family, yellow/brown tones, the Center
Metal: Wealth, precision, white/gold tones, the West
Water: Wisdom, good fortune, black/blue tones, the North
Key Areas of the Home
The Front Door — The Mouth of Chi
The front door is the point through which energy enters the home. It should be kept clean and well-lit, able to open fully without obstruction. Avoid placing a mirror directly opposite the front door, as it will reflect positive energy back out.
The Bedroom — The Energy of Rest
The bed should not be positioned directly in line with the door, and mirrors should not reflect the bed. The headboard should rest against a solid wall. Use soft, soothing colors and avoid an excess of electronic devices.
The Kitchen — The Source of Prosperity
The stove should not face directly toward the sink, as fire and water are opposing elements. The kitchen should be kept clean, well-organized, and adequately lit.
Feng Shui Tips You Can Apply Right Away
Clear out items you no longer use, open windows to allow fresh air to circulate, place auspicious plants to strengthen the Wood element, use a water fountain or fish tank to enhance the Water element (associated with prosperity), and arrange your desk so you face the door rather than sitting with your back to it.
