Many people have known their zodiac sign since childhood, but when they visit an astrologer for the first time, they often encounter a puzzling question: "What time were you born?" This is because in Thai astrology, what is lagna is just as important as the birth sign, and calculating lagna requires precise birth time as the key foundation. This article will introduce you to lagna in an easy-to-understand way—no astrology background needed.

What is Lagna in Thai Astrology

According to Thai astrology texts, lagna (sometimes written as "lakkhan") is the zodiac sign that serves as the starting point of one's destiny chart. It is calculated using the Ayanamsa method, which begins at the position of the sun at sunrise on that day, then advances according to the rising time of each zodiac sign. Simply put, it is the zodiac sign that is currently rising at the exact moment you were born.

In a birth chart, or what is called a "destiny chart," lagna functions as the starting point for all 12 houses (houses of destiny), each of which governs different aspects of life—whether health, career, love, or wealth. Lagna is thus like a "front door of the house" from which every planet in the destiny chart must reference its position.

How Does Lagna Differ from Birth Sign

This is the most frequently asked question and a common source of confusion. Let me clarify the difference.

Birth Sign — Determined by Birth Date

Birth sign, which many people are familiar with, is the zodiac sign through which the sun travels during the month and year you were born. For example, anyone born between April 14 and May 14 has the sun in Aries. People born in the same month have the same birth sign, even if they were born in different years or different countries.

Lagna — Determined by Birth Time

Lagna is entirely different because lagna continuously moves through zodiac signs throughout the day, and each sign takes a different amount of time—ranging from about 1 hour 12 minutes to 2 hours 48 minutes. Therefore, people born on the same day but at different times—morning versus evening—can have lagna signs that differ by up to 6 zodiac signs! This is why twins born just hours apart can have very different lives, according to Thai astrology beliefs.

Summary for easy remembering: Birth sign tells you who you are; lagna tells you how you view the world and express yourself.

Why Astrologers Always Ask for Birth Time

Now you understand why Thai astrologers place such importance on birth time. Without it, lagna cannot be determined, and without knowing lagna, the 12 houses of the destiny chart cannot be correctly positioned. The result is that fortune reading loses accuracy in many important areas.

• House 1 (Lagna) — Self, personality, overall health
• House 2 — Wealth, income, valuables
• House 7 — Love, spouse, relationships
• House 10 — Career, reputation, success

The position of each planet in these houses changes entirely if lagna changes. Therefore, a birth time error of even just 1-2 hours can significantly alter the entire destiny chart. If you want to try a basic reading, feel free to use our free fortune-telling tool.

What Does Each Lagna Sign Indicate

According to Thai astrology texts, each lagna sign conveys different characteristics and life energy, such as

• Aries Lagna — High energy, courageous, likes to lead, often a pioneer
• Taurus Lagna — Values stability, patient, has good taste, places importance on material comfort and physical pleasure
• Gemini Lagna — Talkative, adaptable, loves learning, often interested in many things at once
• Cancer Lagna — Sensitive, caring toward others, attached to family and memories
• Leo Lagna — Charming, likes to be the center of attention, has leadership qualities and high pride
• Virgo Lagna — Meticulous, analytical, loves cleanliness and order

There are 6 more lagna signs remaining, each with its own subtleties. However, lagna alone does not tell everything—it must be viewed together with planets in the lagna house and the ruler of the lagna, according to Thai astrologers' beliefs.

Is Lagna More Important than Birth Sign

This question has no fixed answer because in Thai astrology both serve their own purposes. However, if we compare them, many astrologers believe that lagna shows more clearly to others because it is the "face" we present to the outside world, while the birth sign (the sun's position) reflects our inner nature and life force.

Think of it simply: birth sign is "your true self at home," while lagna is "the personality you display when meeting others." Some people who feel their zodiac reading doesn't match them at all may find that their lagna stands out more than their birth sign, causing others to perceive lagna's energy more strongly. Frequently Asked Questions About Lagna

If I Don't Know My Birth Time At All, Can I Still Read Lagna

According to Thai astrology principles, if your true birth time is unknown, some astrologers use "chart rectification" or "Rectification," working backward from significant life events to estimate your birth time. However, this method requires high expertise, and results may contain some margin of error. Some people temporarily use their birth sign as lagna instead, but accuracy in the house chart will be reduced.

How Are Lagna and Ruling Planet Related

According to Thai astrology texts, the zodiac sign that is lagna will have a "ruling planet" governing it, called the ruling planet of destiny, or lagna ruler. The position of this planet in your destiny chart indicates your life direction overall. For example, if your lagna is Aries, Mars is your ruling planet. Whichever house Mars occupies tends to be particularly significant in that person's life.

Can Lagna Change, or Does It Stay With You Forever

Your birth lagna does not change because it is determined by your fixed birth time and place. However, Thai astrology also includes calculations of "planetary lagna" or lagna in the yearly progressed chart (Solar Return), which changes each year and is used to forecast life trends for that particular year—different from your birth lagna, which is a permanent foundation.

Understanding what lagna is and how it differs from your birth sign is an important first step in genuinely getting to know Thai astrology. Lagna is not just an astronomical number—according to Thai astrologers' long-held beliefs, it is a reflection of the universe at the moment you appeared in this world.
