Ceremony to Invite Sacred Objects from Cheng Chuay Keng Shrine, Phatthalung Continuing the Faith of Thai-Chinese People

Patthalung Municipality in coordination with Patthalung Province held a ceremony to invite sacred objects from Cheng Tui Keng Shrine to bless the faithful people. This continues the traditions and beliefs of the Thai-Chinese community in the southern region that have been continuously preserved.

Beliefs about Cheng Tui Keng in Chinese Culture

According to the beliefs of overseas Chinese, Cheng Tui Keng, or called "Chao Mae Guan Im" in Thai, is regarded as the goddess of compassion and aid to those suffering. In Chinese legends, she is a great Bodhisattva who can hear the voices of all beings in the world and provide assistance to the faithful.

The worship of Cheng Tui Keng is widespread among Teochew and Hakka Chinese who immigrated and settled in southern Thailand, particularly in Patthalung, Phuket, Trang, and Songkhla provinces. Local people believe that paying respects and making wishes to her brings happiness, prosperity, and protection from various dangers.

Chinese Shrines and Community Identity

Chinese shrines in Chinese culture are not merely places of religious ceremonies, but also centers of spiritual unity for the community, places where generations come together to socialize, make merit, and pass on traditions to their descendants. The ceremony of inviting sacred objects to bless the devotees is therefore an important ritual that demonstrates respect and the preservation of cultural roots.

Such ceremonies are typically held on special occasions or important seasons in the Chinese calendar, with preparations of offerings, incense, candles, flowers, and fruits according to tradition. Faithful people come to participate in the ceremony to seek blessings and show gratitude to their ancestors who built the shrine.

Passing Down Faith in the Present Age

Though time has passed and society has changed, beliefs and faith in Chinese deities still play an important role in the lives of many Thai-Chinese people. The fact that government agencies such as Patthalung Municipality and the province support the organization of these ceremonies reflects the recognition and appreciation of cultural diversity in Thai society.

The preservation of shrines and related traditions not only helps maintain cultural identity, but also promotes cultural tourism and fosters good understanding among various ethnic groups in Thai society. Cheng Tui Keng Shrine is therefore more than a sacred place, but a bridge connecting the past with the present, and beliefs with the ways of life of the people.
