What Is Retrograde?
In astrology, a retrograde is a period during which a planet appears to move backward when observed from Earth. While the planet does not actually reverse course, the effect is an optical illusion created by the relative positions of orbits. In Thai astrology, this phenomenon is indicated by the symbol "ส" placed after the planet's name.
Mercury Retrograde — The Most Talked-About
Mercury retrograde occurs three to four times a year, lasting approximately three weeks each time. Because Mercury governs communication, commerce, and the nervous system, its retrograde periods can bring miscommunications, undelivered emails, electronic malfunctions, contracts that require extra caution, and travel disruptions.
Other Planetary Retrogrades
Venus Retrograde: Old romantic feelings resurface, ex-partners may reappear, and existing relationships call for reassessment.
Mars Retrograde: Energy levels drop, new projects are best avoided, and the risk of accidents increases.
Jupiter Retrograde: A time to revisit beliefs, values, and matters of education; luck and expansion tend to slow down.
Saturn Retrograde: Old lessons come back around, and established structures and systems need to be re-examined.
Should You Really Fear Retrograde?
There is no need to be afraid. Retrograde periods are better suited to "reviewing" than to "starting fresh." They are the universe's way of telling us to pause, look back, resolve unfinished business, and prepare for the next step forward.
How to Navigate a Retrograde Period
Review documents and contracts carefully before signing. Always back up important data. Practice patience with delays. Use the time to revisit existing plans rather than launching new ones. This period is far better suited to completing unfinished work than to beginning something new. Most importantly, do not panic.
